Octopus Carpaccio Natto Bowl

My home is being remodeled and I’ve been itching to make something but haven’t been able to. My work around for this involved creating a simple but tasty octopus carpaccio mixed with natto and raw egg. I love natto!

I bummed over to the asian grocery store in downtown LA and lucky for me there was a $1 natto sale going on. Once you acquire your beans open that sucker up and pour the spicy mustard packet into the container (not the flavored soy sauce packet mind you, that stuff has some crazy ingredients that are better left outside the belly) instead, use a dash of normal soy sauce.

Stir that baby till it looks like the slimy goodness you see above. I do a 20 second count down mix before I start to get too hungry.

Slice and dice some green onion up. Easy peasy! Keep both the green and white parts. I used a whole stalk because I love that stuff. Feel free to use less if you like or none at all 😀

I bought a pre-cooked octopus leg for $4. That will be your best bet if you’re looking for something quick. Slice the leg as thin as you can get it. Once done, sprinkle some salt on them and a good squeeze of fresh lemon and gently mix it so all the pieces have some lemon on them.

Green onion, a bowl of hot rice, natto, and octopus, you are now ready to get your natto bowl on! Not pictured is the raw egg that you’ll need. Just like in the very first image, place all the ingredients on top of the rice and crack the egg into the very middle.

Give that tasty bowl of goodness a good mix and add extra soy sauce to taste. A super healthy, quick, and delicious lunch.

Ingredients:
1 container of natto
1 small leg of octopus
1/2 lemon
Soy sauce – to taste
Salt – to taste
1 cup of cooked rice
1 green onion stalk
1 raw egg

Steps:
-Slice the green onion into small pieces
-Slice the octopus leg as think as you can and place on a plate. Sprinkle a little salt and squeeze some lemon over the sliced octopus and gently mix
-Prepare the natto using only the mustard pack and not the flavored soy sauce pack. Instead, use a small splash of normal soy sauce and mix for 20 second till nice and stringy
-Place the rice in a bowl and start assembling your bowl. Natto on one side, octopus slices on another, crack open the raw egg into the middle of the dish
-Last, place the green onion on top of everything
-Add extra soy sauce to taste and give everything a good mix

Enjoy!

I have heard of, but never seen or tasted natto in my neck of the woods (central France)! I am curious though. My son says it’s special, but very good. If I ever go to Japan that is one of the dishes on my list. Your plate is very appetizing!

    1. Thank you so much! I hope you will get the chance one day to try it one day soon! <3

  5. I have never heard of this dish before and I love octopus!!!

    1. It’s a great recipe if you ever get an itch for a simple Japanese lunch 😀

      1. Oh I would love to try it but we don’t have an Asian grocery store where I live. The only octopus I can buy is frozen and nasty! The best I get around here is calamari!

  6. I LOVE octopus! This sounds delish. Are you just using the yolk of the egg or are you using all of it?

    1. I’m using the whole egg 🙂 If it’s a little too runny and the rice isn’t quite hot enough to semi-cook it I’ll crack the egg over the rice and put it in the microwave for 1 minute and that will make it more of the texture of a soft boiled egg 🙂

      1. Ah I see, I will also try this 👍 Totally my kind of dish. I hate hard cooked yolks! 😊

I’ve heard so much about natto. How would you describe it’s taste? I hear it’s one of those things where you either love it or hate it. I haven’t tried it yet, so I actually don’t know how I feel about it. Lol

    1. It’s definitely ones of those things that you’ll love or hate when you first try but it’ll grow on you over time 🙂 Kind of like eating blue cheese for the first time, you learn to like it after a while. But with all the right kind of ingredients that can be paired with natto it can make it taste super good! <3

  8. Looks delicious! Although I’m not too keen on nato, perhaps I ate it wrong. I just didn’t get it 😵

    1. I definitely know where you’re coming from. It took me a good 10 years to like natto and somewhere after a decade my taste buds finally accepted it hahah 😀
